What is Scrum?
Scrum is a framework within which people can address complex adaptive problems, while productivity and creativity delivering products of the highest possible value.
-
Each framework contains a number of "sprints." Each sprint's purpose is to redefine what you are trying to achieve as a team.
-
Each sprint, you essentially try to progress towards the goal, but learn and adjust based on everything you experience within each previous sprint.
-
Before each sprint, the team builds their product backlog. The team determines which tasks and user stories they can get done within that individual sprint... There are methods to help determine estimation times based on the inputs of the team.
At the end of each sprint, the team will gather for the review (a meeting with the client to show progress) and a retrospective. The retrospective is conducted by the Scrum Master - It is essentially evaluating how well the sprint went. The team will then move their original tasks and user-stories along the board, into their proper categories (To Do, Doing, Done)... New user-stories and tasks can be added at the end of the retro, as it transitions into the next sprint.

The Team and their roles...

The job of the Scrum Master is to communicate between the Product Owner and the development team. Although equal to the members of the dev team, their role is to facilitate each sprint and guide the team to success. They conduct the sprint retrospective activity.

The dev team's job is to build the system the best way they know how (usually within the client's requirements if possible). They develop a culture that adds to their work environment. This makes it easy to produce creativity and productivity. Usually, the team splits up the tasks based on each members skill-set.
